COMPLIMENTARY BANQUET, About thirty or forty guests, consisting «jf members of the FeikUnj? football Club and enthusiastic patrons of the game, assembled on Thursday night in the Empire "Hotel at the invitation of the popular and esteemed hostess, Mrs Oliver, -who gave the banquet in honor of the Club and its members. Mr Lovejoy having sang about " His Dream," Mr Donnelly responded to tie toast of his health in a neat speech, saying that be had always enjoyed seeing an interest taken in such a noble game as football, and he would repeat the presentation of a ; trophy on a fixture occasion. Mr P, Bartholomew proposed " The Captain of the Team, Mr R. Whisker," dwelling on the capabilities of the latter and his men to a great extent. Mr Lovejoy then sang "I weeps and I wanders," when Mr Kirton responded, remarking that he had always noticed through life that the best athletes were always the ibravest when occasion arrived. Messrs Ueen and F. Bray having sung, "The Xadies " was proposed by Mr Lovejoy, .-•coupled with the name of Mr A. Parr, who returned thanks after Mr Fowler had ssung " The Cheesemonger's Daughter." The Chairman proposed, the health- of Mr P. Bartholomew, which was followed by *' Respect to McGruiness J ' by Mr JLoen Mr Bartholomew, in responding, intiiuated that he would present a Gup next jfe&r to the Union for the first fifteens to compete for, and complimented the young :men ofFeildjng in his remarks. "The Tress " being given by "Mr! Lovejoy, Mr Torthouse sang "Oh the Ball," followed. t>y Mr Kirton responding ito the lastanentioried toast. Mr Nicholson proposed ""The Manawatu Rugby Union," coupled Tvith the names of .Mesßr6..."Whisker and riSaywell, who responded.: Mr Benson informed the gathering that although he Avas leaving the colony shortly on a visit !Home he Was willing, to present -a cup to the Union for the junior teams to compete ibr, who deseryed encouragement as well 43.S the senior players..
