Political
The rumour to the effect thnt Mr J. G. Wilson was going to retire from the contest for the Palmerston seat has been contradicted. It is understood that although Mr John Stevens' supporters are not making "much fuss " they are doing a lot of useful work which, added to that already done before Mr Steveos cime back from India, will give him a creditable position on the poll at the day of election. But Mr rirani, who has been doing his case an immeoie amount of good by bis frankness and perfect straightforwardness, is almost certain to slip in between the two other can* didatea. Mr Wilson should retire because, as he admits himself, he is " played out," and should make room lor a younger and more vigorous man.
