(per united pkess association.) London, October 14. Owing to the renewed troubles with the corn porters, the Dockers 1 Committee is engaging hundreds of permanent hands at 24s per wcc-.k. The engineers have agreed to a weekly levy of 6d in aid of the Australian strikers. Commenting on a letter descriptive of the strikes in Australia, the Times states it is amazed at the magnitude of the struggle and at the power and pretensions of the leaders, also the extreme developments of the conflict between capital and labour. Nine seamen, articled to the New Zealand Shipping Company's Hurunui. were charged at the Police Court with disobeying orders to discharge cargo. Mr McDonald, who defends them, raised a point whether seamen can be called on to discharge cargo without being paid lumpers' wages.
