The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1890. A Suggestion Adopted
It will he remembered that shortly before the close of the last session of the. New Zealand Parliament, >ir Greorge Grey made a suggestion to the effect that in order to guard against the evils arising from present and possible future strikes among the laborers employed in getting out coal, the Government should acquire and open up coal mines in different parts, and work them for the use of the iState railways and steamers. In New South Wales that suggestion has been adopted at once, and, as we are informed by a telegram dated last Saturday, from Sydney : — •' The Railway Commissioners having given the men an opportunity of going to work out the coal, and they having refused, the Government has determined to open the mine on its own account. A mine has been selected, but the name will not be made public for the present." The good example thus given will no doubt be followed by our Commissioners although it will be " a hard pill for them to swallow" seeing that Sir George Grey is the author of the idea.
