Apiti Notes
[feom a correspondence.] Since I last wrote to you Mr Arkwright iad a meeting here at which Mr D. MeXeazie presided as chairman. Mr Arkwrighfc was very well received. He said lie considered the working classes were too much taxed for the food they eat and the clothes they wear. He thought it would be better to relieve them, and make j tip any deficiency from the revenue from land He approved of making roads in sew country before selling the land, so as to give new settlers a chance of making their homes at as little outlay as possible, and getting in their provisions cheap. Mr Potts asked if Mr Arkwright was in favor of subsidising Catholic schools. Mr ** Arkwright said he was, but not for them alone, as the children of other religions could be treated the same. He was in favor of the proposed bridge over the Oroua river at Apiti, and if elected would do his best to get the work done. A cordial vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Oiceley, seconded by Mr R. Stewart and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
