LISBIMAN V. WILKS. VEBDIOT FOB PLAINTIFF FOB £200 AND COSTS. This case was heard before His ! Honor the Chief Justice, Sir J, Pren> i degast, yesterday. Mr Barmcoat who appeared for tbd plaintiff (instructed by Mz W. A. Sandilands, of Feilding) applied, to have the indictment amended, to which the Chief Justice assented. Evidence was called as id receipt ot jthe letter containing the lib»»I. Messrs A. A. biowne, G. Carsod, and F. Lethbrllge were called as witnesses. , His Honor, addressing the juryj explained that as- this was an undefended case, they would only have to decide as to the amount of damages for the publication of the libellous letter. If they were satisfied that the plaintiff's character had been injured* they should award substantial dam* ages. The ju>y retired at 12.40. and after 15 minutes' absence returned a-verdiofc for £200 damages, icosts being allowed according to scale. —Chronicle.
