Service of Song
On Tuesday eveuing last the Presbyterian Church was comfortably filled by *n admiring audience to listen tp the Service of Song, " Frozen to Death," which had been duly announced to be produced by the choir of that church, assisted by other, local musicians. The origin of the piece being from a Yorkshire factory, it was, of course, necessary that some gentlemen' capable of speaking that shire's dialect should read the interesting story. This office was worthily filled "by Mr J. Gould and great credit is due to him for the capital manner in which he accomplished his arduous task. The choir consisted of about 30 ladies and gentlemen, and the style in which they aequited themselyes was commented favorably upon by all present. The choruses were admirably rendered, especially •'Remember the Poor" and " Beyond the River.". -The quartette "Not lost, ' but gone Before," by the Misses M. Bartholomew and J. Fraser, and Messrs J. Bartholomew, j unr., and Milson, was excellently sung, being given with good taste and proper expression. The Misses Fraser's duett, " Mother dear, I'm happy Now," went fairly well, while the quartette «* Soft floating on the Eyening Air," given by Miss M. Rutherford, Mrs Dowling, and Messrs Dowling and Bleakley, gave eyery satisfaction to those assembled. One pleasing feature in this piece was the humming accompaniment of the choir in the chorus while the" four performers were singing their parts. Mrs W. A. Collins sang the solo part in the closing anthem very effectively, the chorus being taken up by the choir, thus concluding the programme. The service was m every way an entire success, and much of the credit must be attached to Mr W. Gh Shearer, the conductor. MissE. Watts presided at the organ, and played the. accompaniments yery efficiently.
