Mr Macfarlane has given notice in the Legislative Council to move for the imposition of import duties on maize, wheat, oats, barley and rye, of 6d per bushel ; on beans and peas, 4d per bushel ; on hay, chaff and potatoes, . 10s per ton ; and, on flour and meal, ill per ton. Mblbottbnb, September 24. The chief officers of the Union Co. 's new steamer Tavinini arrived at Wilson's Promontory in a boat, and reported the vessel had broken her shaft some distance to the east of the point. Shortly after the F. and 0. Co.'s steamer Carthage was sighted with the Tavinini in tow. The latter sailed on her maiden trip in these waters to Suva on Saturday. Tridentine is scratched for the Caulfield, and Drednought for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. This Day. Hopetown is causing some anxiety, and she sails for London early next month to obtain the belt medical advice. The Council of the Chamber of Commerce passed |a resolution that, notwithstanding the fact that the Imperial Government declined to contribute to the cable subsidy, this Chamber trusts the Postmaster-General will strive to earry out the deoisions arrived at at the late Conference. It was also decided to urge on other colonies to adopt a similar resolution. • ■ .
