THE EABLT CLOSING MOVEMENT. TO THE EDITOR OP THE STAR. Sir, — I see by your Saturday's issue Mr B. F. Haybittle says all the tradespeople in Feilding, except Mr S. J. Thompson and myself, signed in favor of the Wednesday half holiday, and that the many will have to bow to the dictum of, and suffer for, the few. I should be sorry that Mr Haybittle, or any one else, should suffer on my account ; but I should say, however, that the employers are the sufferers in this case. I don't want the public to run away with the idea that I bear any ill will towards Mr Haybittle or the cause he represents. Oh 1 no, I admire him. Indeed, I think the employees should rejoice that they have such a champion. 1 still fail to see the good that is to come from the movement ; in fact, I don't see how it work at all in the busy season. I hear a good many people say, " Oh I You will be just as well off at the end of the week." Others say, " What difference will half a day's pay make ? " Such remarks, I think, area long ' way from the question at issue. I'll put '' the question the other way, and ask any ; of these men if they would like to work ; half a day every week for nothing ? It is not the half day's pay I object to, but it : is the inconvenience to storekeepers as well as to the public I may say, so far as I am concerned, have the half holiday. I suppose I must be content to follow the : crowd, wanting to live peaceably with all men. I will close now, and await the tolling of the bell for the Wednesday half holiday. — I am, &c, A. W. McFewba*.
