Our report of the Knights of Labor meeting on Saturday night and 'Frisco Mail Items appears on our fourth page. Sir Walter Buller is now mentioned aa a probable candidate for the Palnaerston seat. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 9 a.m. to-day : — Warnings for gales and rain hold good at all places. A meeting of Mr Macarthur's Election Committee ' will be held in Mr Owen's office on Thursday eyening at 8 o'clock. A number of smart young men have left this district for Wellington within the last few' days, to seek employment with the Union S.S. Company. ' Ten shillings reward is offered by Mr F. Clissold for the recovery of a black and tan (sheep dog) slut answering to the name of Shela, His Excellency the (Governor has been pleased to appoint Daniel Johnston, Esq., L.R.C.P,, Edinburgh, to be public vaccinator for the district of Gisborne. The show room now being arranged by Messrs Richards and Co. for the display of new season's millinery and drapery goods, will be completed in a few days. • At the Dunedin Hunt Club races on Saturday the respectable dividends of £65 9s 6d and £41 4s were paid out on The Druid, who won the Hunt Club Cup. Mr Strachan, secretary of the local Football Club, has received intimation that the Wairarapa footballers will play the Manawatu team on Friday, the 19th instant, instead of Saturday next. In the report of the Knights of Labour, published in the' fourth yas,e, by a typogiaphicul error the meeting was called the Limited Assembly instead of "United Assembly." The employes in the various business establishments in Feilding will meet tonight to make arrangements to obtain the consent of employers to observe Wednesday afternoon as a half-holiday. We have to acknowledge receipt from Mrs Beading, the honorary secretary, of a complimentary ticket for the coffee supper and concert to be held in the Foresters' Hall on Thursday evening next. Mr Thompson, for H. Collier and Co. , pianoforte tuner, has been ia the district for the past few days. He will be in. Feilding at the Empire Hotel on Saturday next. Orders may be left at this office. . ' ' In Georgia (U.S.A.) Dayid Beckman, a Mormon elder, who has recently been attempting to " conyert " some of the female population of that town, was tarred and feathered, made to ride the rail, and afterwards driven out of the State. Visitors to the Theatre Royal m Palmerston, on Saturday last, were much pleased with the drop scene which is splendidly painted, being really a work of art. The proscenium is also well executed. The strike has been not altogether without its advantages to some people (says the Wanganui Herald). One Hautapu farmer, Mr Selby, has received advice that his potatoes consigned to Auckland, have realised £7 per ton. . We notice that Mr H. L. James, 8.A., formerly of the Feilding State School, has been appointed Acting Librarian of the General Assembly Library at Wellington. We congratulate Mr James on being advanced to a position he is so well qualified to fill. A notice appears elsewhere inviting persons interested in dairy farming in this district, to attend a meeting to ba held in the Courthouse on Friday next, to hear an address, by Mr Sawers, the Government dairy expert, on this important subject. Over leader we publish an advertisement to-day, from Messrs R. and E. Tmgey, of Palmerston North, Wanganui, and Wellington, in which they announce the arrival of large shipments of trade requisites in the shape of paint, paperhangings, &c, &c, all of which are to be disposed of at the lowest prices. Mr Coe has reported to the Manawatu Herald that Mr Hitchcock, a gentleman from Christchurch, is now visiting Manawatu, to purchase flax up to 2000 tons, and is prepared to advance £15 on flax produced equal to samples he holds. He is also inclined to lease a mill or two. The first steamship of the direct line between New York and Australian ports sailed from the place first named on August 20th, with a cargo of 5000 tons of miscellaneous merchandise, and will soon be followed by another ship of the same line. Mr A. D. Willis returned to Wanganui on Saturday last after an extended tour through the principal towns in the colony, during which he has done good business in placing his Christmas and New Year's cards. Mr Willis speaks highly of the reception he received in Dunedin and Canterbury where the excellence of his lithographic work was well appreciated. ' The cowboys, who form one of |the j chief attractions of the Wild West Show, soon to visit Feilding, include ' Broncho ' George, ' Arkansaw ' of Reno, ' Arizona ' I Charlie (champion ripper of Arizona), ' Raw-hide ' Knight, Buckskin Bill, Colorado Jack, Wichitten Jim, Red River Kit, Chayenne Joe, Monta Kid, and a typical cowboy rejoicing in f,he euphonious title of ' Butcher-knife Bill.' Members of the Legislative Council call the Members of the House of Representatives "Bluebottles." This affectionate if not over respectful designation waR earned, no doubt, by the generally " fly blown " appearance of members of the Lower House after a keenly contested general election. The fossilised members of the Upper House escape this little evil, and can therefore afford to sneer at their less fortunate fellow politicians. At Lyttelton yesterday Captain Adams of the British ship America, wounded one of his crew named Carl Johnson, atjed 2 , by a revolver shot. He and the cook had a struggle and were parted by the captain, when the cook threatened to use a knife on the captain. The captain subsequently told the cook that if he repeated the expression he would shoot him, and on the cook, who was under h.< influence of drink, further in^u'ting him, the captain fired a shot which missed the cook but struck Johnson in the right thigh.
