Whitaker V. Hutchison Case.

Wellington, September 9. The defence in the Whitaker v. Hutchison case wa3 filed yesterday. The first plea is that of traversing the allegations of publication ; the second raises the question of whether publication is within the Parliamentary Privileges Act ; the third alleges that it is made without malice ; the fourth that it is made for the public beneiit ; the fifth and principal defence pleads justification on the ground of the allegations being true in substance and in fact As to the personal charges, it is alleged that the plaintiff and the other two Ministers were respectively liable to the Bank of New Zealand in large amounts, which they were unable to discharge if called upon to meet the same in the ordinary cotirse of business. As to the public charges alleged, they were created by Ministers as competent and proper for Parliament to deal with.
