Train Service
In our advertising columns to-day a notification appears to the effect that owing to the stoppage of the coal supply all trains on the Wanganui section of railway will be entirely suspended on Thursdays, on which days trains from and to Wellington will run to and from Palmerston only. Now, if the Commissioners had made it then* special study to select the day which would cause the greatest inconvenience to settlers on this coast they could not have succeeded better. Thursday is market day in Feilding, when the largest and most important stock sales in the district are held, and for which arrangements are generally made for months ahead by the auctioneers with their clients. We suspect that the conveyance of mails has been allowed to influence the Commissioners, but in our opinion the convenience of the settlers ought to be a first consideration. We are informed by Mr Daw, mail contractor, that he will run a line of coaches to Palmerston in order to connect with the trains for Wellington at railway rates, so that even out of this evil good may come to our enterprising fellow townsman.
