John Chinaman
.» i Our readers are already familiar with the fact that a combination has been made by the European fruiterers and grocers in the various large towns iv the colony, more especially the seaports, against John because he nndersells them. The following extract from a Wellington paper will show that our Celestial frieud has risen to the occasion, and rather turned the tables on his enemies : — "John Chinaman is always being 1 maligned for sel ling too cheaply, and the unions in veigh against the Celestials because at the prices at which they provide vegetables it is impossible for a white man to compete. To get over this difficulty, it is rumoured the Chinese greengrocers have entered into a combination and raised the prices, which they say they are only too pleased to do." This is anew form of unionism, and one which was not contemplated by the anti-Chinese agitators."
