The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, AUGUST 26, 1890. Parliament
On Saturday last our rallied contemporary the Wanganui Herald in the course of a leading article said : —*' It has hitherto been too much the fashion to grumble at and decry the • morabcrs and their doings in Parliament, quite overlooking the fact that the Assembly, good or bad, is the handiwork of the electors by whose vo'es such Assembly wa9 (treated. Any r' j fletrti"ns cant upon tnmubei-s, or any ehuiue which may he tbit at the «ou-
duct of such members, amounts to self-condemnation. The electors are wh lly responsible." Just so. But on the other hand the Herald overlooks the fact that when a candidate "goes a- wooing" the suffrages <-f the electors, he is like a youug man who goes a-wooing the object of his affections, he only shows the bast side of his (thet ranter. All the rest has to be found out after the maniag — ,»r election. And, in one case as in the other, sometimes some very oad bargains are made. The only real good thing the present wretched Parliament has done, is that they have, so far, taught the electors to have a hand iv choi.sing their representatives. The old position of the representatives choosing the electorate has been much weakened.
