Kiwitea Road Board

(Continued from last issue) . W The following report from the Engineer ■was read : — The totara tree applied for by Mr "Wickens is a valuable tree, and I would recommend the board not to sell it. There have been two totara trees taken oft the road and I think one of them has been used by Mr Wickens for fencing. Ke bad places in the Main cross-road, complaint made by Oldham Bros., the roadman has been instructed to -make these places passable. Mr Pask's complaint re trees on Mangaoni road — I have arranged with Mr Pask to fell them for 20s. The roadman has been instructed to repair the bad places on Mcßeth's and Junction-roads. I have arranged for the following works : — Mr Fowler to fell the bush on the Gorge road in front of his property at 32s per acre. Messrs Lyon and Son for the delivery of gravel on the continuation of the Taonui-road at Is lOd per yard; and ft r fencing the sideling and widening bridle track on Pohangina-road — fencing .£3 5s Id per chain, widening bridle track £18 10s Id. I have not called tenders for felling and clearing the Associatiou-road as there is 19 chains felled stump high and not bur cd. I have stopped the metalling on the Pohangina and Ferry roads for the j.r.:sent. I had to take away the roadman from the "Waituna ward to level gravel on the Taonui-road as I could not get a suitable man for leveling the gravel. I will send him back in a few days. I have called fresh tenders for making the bridle track on the Awahou-road, as Younger and Lame have thrown it up, and the next tea. ertri Lyon and Son, would not take it up. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Haythorne, That the Engineer have the tree across the track opposite Mr Barrett's section removed at his (Mr Barrett's) expense, unless Mr Barrett does so at once. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Powles, That the secretary write to Mr Anderson re bushfelling, that the work will be paid for when passed by the Engineer ; also, as regards the fourths, that tl ey have been expenled on the Pohang'n'i road un:i wo or three hundred pounds besides. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Haythorne, seconded by Mr Homer, That the Engineer be instructed to let privately or by tender the stab fencing of a portion o f the cemetery at Birmingham as formerly passed by the Board ; also, to procure some grass seed, and employ men to sow the same at once. — Carried, Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Mills, That Messrs Younger and Laing be informed that the Board cannot depart from its usual rule as regards deposits. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Homer, seconded by Mr Haythorne, That a special rate of 3d in the £ be struck on the whole of the Apiti ward Birmingham Special Settlement (Crown and Native Lands excepted) for the ensuing year. — Carried. A tender was received for the position of Eanger to the Board. A conversation was held on the subject. Mr Williamson was opposed to appointing a ranger, arid advocated letting the right to graze the roads. At present the trouble was not so much from stray cattle as from those which were deliberately turned out on the roads, and that not so much by neighbors as by persons from a distance. Mr Taylor advocated the grazing of the roads, but where cattle were becoming an annoyance to settlers by cutting up roads leading to their properties they should give orders to have them impounded at t^^fcenharu or Feilding. Homer objected to thiß while there V -was a pound section at Birmingham, and suggested building a pound there, but he did not see that a ranger was required. Mr Lucas agreed with this and suggested enquiry being made as to the cost. Proposed by Mr Lucas, seconded by "Mr Haythorne, That Mr Homer be requested to enquire and report by next meeting as to the cost of erecting a pound at Birmingham, and that Mr Mills do likewise at Cheltenham. — Carried. T© iders were opened for various works, and the following were accepted : — Dougherty Bros., Awahou-road; Aia-;ke]l and Co., Oroua Valley-road , Wedge and Macauley, Mcßeth's-road ; H. Madeen, Kimbolton-road ; J. McKinnan, Kiwitea Cross-road and Whare-road ; W. Warren, Bluff-road ; J. Schapleski, Middle-road. Proposed by Mr Homer, and seconded "by Mr Haythorne, " That application be made for a certificate to enable the board to pay interest on the Apiti and Pemberton loan out of the thirds accruing from sections fronting the Kimbolton-road." — Carried. Proposed by Mr Haythorne, and seconded by Mr Ward, "That the engineer be authorised to employ a man and dray by day work for the purpose of carting a few loads of hard stone to re■pair the Kimbolton-oid where needed within the Kimbolton Ward, and to employ a man, if needed, to break up the stones and to do other necessary maintenance work, such expenditure not to exceed the sum of £20."— Carried. Accounts were passed for payment, and the board adjourned.
