The prospects of European crops generally are improving. Three packages of butter shipped in the Orient Company's steamer Oroya, from Australia, ariived in splendid condition, and not tainted as most previous shipment have been. Australian butter is quoted at 80s ; Danish, 935. Wellington, August 2 Leary and Co. report prices for the past week: — Potatoes 50s to 555, oats Is 6d to Is 9d, pollard 80s, bran 70s, oaten sheaf chaff 68s to 70s, oatmeal £9 10s, maize 3s, wheat 3s 4d, fowls' wheat 2s 6d to 2s 9d, malting barley 3s nominal, beans, 3s to 3s 3d, peas, 3s, pearl barley £17, flour £9 10s, wheatmeal £10, bacon (Dimock's cure) 6£d, hams Bd, cheese 3£d to 4£d, eggs Is 4d, turkeys 7s, geese ss, ducks 38 6d, fowls 2s 8d per pair, figs 7s and 225, new dates s^d, old ditto 4£d, apples, 5s 6d to Bs, Bare lona nuts 6£d, altuoud nuts, 9^d peanuts 2d to 2£d, oranges 8s 6d to 9a 6d, lemons 8s to 10b. cocksfoot grass seed 3£d to 4d, salt butter 6d to 7d, fresh in pats, farmers' make 9d, factory made ll^d, honey, 4d to 4£d, rape seed 16s, onions 120s to 230, seed potatoes 55s to 60.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Corupauy (Limited) have received the following cable message from their London office, dated Ist instant: — Tallow. — Market quieter. There is a good Continental demand for lower and medium sorts. Fine mutton is worth 25s 9d and good beef 24s 6d per cwt respoctively. Frozen Meats. — Mutton marke' is quiet. Canterbury is worth 4£d and Wellington 4d per lb. Prime New Zealand lambs are worth per carcase 5^ per lb. Be-^f — Market quiet. New Zealand forequarters are worth 3d per lb and hind-quarters 4d. New Zealand hemp — There is more inquiry. In sympathy with the advance in Manila, New Zealand hemp has advanced 108 per ton.
