Tragic Scene in a Circus
The 400 or 500 persons present at -a ' circus ' performance on Monday* ' evening at Jasz-Bereny, the Hungarian corn market,* were treated to a tragic spectacles- A woman was performing a, trapeze V act with a male companion, when a man seated in one of the boxes juinp~ed"ihto the ~rin"g7 followed by two children, and seized the 'male' performer] by, the throat as he was bowing' to Y 'the audience after his feat. The man drew a knife and the circus performer seized an iron bar, the two children meanwhile running to the woman with delighted .shouts of "' Mother !" The next moment the two men were lying on the ground, one with the skt 11 fractuie"d and the'other stabbed in the • breast.' The <man in * the audience had recognised his runaway* wife and the mother of his children, who disappearedin January last with Karl TJmsky, propiietor <of the tiavelling circus. ( The chief of police ordeied the .-arrest of all the performers as aiders & abettors'of Umsky. The latter is not likely to live, and the injured husband died without having regained consciousness. As the judicial inve>tigation cannot take place for several weeks, the horses, donkeys, goats, -and other performing animals cf>nnecte'd with the- show, as well as a number of wild beatts comprising the menagerie, have 'all been poisoned by •order, of the municipality of J-i&z-Bereny, as that town could not afford to feed- so many extra and capacious mouths!
