Lipht and Co, at the beginning of this month. The cheque was on the Bank of New South Wales, where Goodwin bad an account, but it was not honoured, as the signature was unlike. Subsequently Hadfield called at the bank and presented anothei cheque, signed " Wm. Goodwin," for £35 10s. Tins was also returned marked "signature unlike." When arrested Hadfield had another cheque drawn oul for £57 178 3d, to which a similar signature was appended. Dunedin, July 21. John Johnson, 52 years of age, for many years an hotelkeeper at Waitaki South, committed suicide by hanging himself in a stable. He had been drink ing heavily, and was in financial diffi culties. Timaru, July 21. Mr E. G. Kerr is announced as a candidate for Timaru. Mr Ross, the Mayor is mentioned as probable, and others are talked of.
