Questioned as to hit 9 future intentions, he said that he was 1 done with the religious racket, and had j resolved to resort to the ways of the men i of the world. With this idea he had t written to Professor Miller to come ovet j from Melbourne to join him in a gymnasj tic I exhibition, and a lecturing tour on . physical culture. As to his experiences [ since he left Auckland for 'Frisco, CJami pett said that wherever he went in Eng- [ land or America he found that copies oi . a New Zealand Methodist publication , containing an exposure of his religious ) career in this colony had preceded him, , and as- bis friends were turned against . him, he was thrown on his own resources, and had perforce to resort to gambling , and the ring. He did not box himself, > but had mado money by backing others. , Clampett denies that on any occasion > since leaving this colony as he attempted to impose {upon religious denominations, and asserts that he finds his own profession more remunerative.
