♦ The death of the Hon. J, White, the most successful racing man in the ■colonies, will be heard of with great regret. With unlimited means at his •command, be gradually built up the first stud to be found in Australasia, and his success on the turf was phenomenal. He won almost every important race in New South Wales and Tictoria with the exception of the CJaulfield Cup, which no horse of his -over succeeded in. Mr White owed much of his good fortune to the success achieved by Chester at the stud, and it is said he won his first bet when that horse won the Melbourne •cup, " The Leviathan" laying him 10,000 to 400 against Chester who just got home in front of the sensational Savanaka, who had been blocked at the turn, but who came with, a wet sail, and all but managed to get up. The A.J.C. Derby was -won five times in succession, with Bargo, Nordenfeldt, Trident, Abetcorn, and Singapore. The Champion Bace in three successive years fell to TAatchlock, Trident and Abercorn, the same horses also winning the A.J.C. St. Leger, while he won the V.R.O. St. Leger four years in succession. The V.R.C. Derty fell to him with Martini-Henry, Nordenfeldt, Trident, Ensign and Dreduought. Morpeth, Trident, and Carlyon won Australian Cups, while Cranbrook got home firßt in the Newmarket Handicap. la the Melbourne Cup he was successful with Chester and MartiniHenry, while the Marlborough Plate was won by Palmyra, Segenhoe, lolanthe, and Acme, the "Hawkesburj Guineas by Monmouth and Bargo, and the Oaulfield Guineas by Carlyon These are only a few of the victories, and being from memory, probably nol 60 full ** might be.
