On Sunday iv Melbourne the de- 1 fence autorities were on the alert in consequence of cable interruptions. The Cerberus was ordered to proceed to the Heads, and torpedo boats were in readiness. No alarm was felt, but this action was taken merely as a precautionary measure. In Adelaide instructions were cent to the light houses and signal stations in the Gulf of St. Vincent to keep a sharp look out and signal incoming vessels promptly.
