HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
July 10. Mr Bruce resumed the debate on the Financial Statement. Although he was a Government supporter, he would not attempt any particular, defence of the policy of the Government. The demand for a dissolution at present was simply abogus cry raised by the Opposition. , Sir John Hall contended that tbe Opposition showed an utter want of unity in opinion or action, excepting only in their desire to oust the Government. He had heard most of the Statements delivered in the colony, and that now before the House was the clearest, .most exhaustive, most able, and most useful of them all. Bearing in mind the'record of the previous Ministry, the Government could anticipate a triumphant endorsement by the electors of the favourable verdict already pronounced by tbe House. Dr Newman spoke at- length in. feffowi^,of the Government, and Sir G*org*Gr»y - replied to Sir John Hall. Mr O'Connor moved the adjournment of the debate, and. the House rose at 1L25 p.m. . July 11, The House met at 2.30. The Hon. Mr Mitchelson moved the appointment of the following committee to inquire into the charges made by Mr Hutchison against the Government: — Messrs Ballance, Bryce, .-Fitchett, Withy, Hall, Larnach, Maoarthur, Ormond, and Seddon. The motion was carried after some debate. Mr O'Conor continuing the debate on the motion that the House go into Committee of Supply, said, that retrenchment in some services had already gone too far. He advooated the taxation of the shipping companies. Mr Richardson spoke strongly in favour of immediate dissolution, on the ground that no good work was likely to be done this session. The Hon. Mr Hislop denied that there was any pressing necessity for a d Solution, and proceeded to review at length the speeches of those members who had supported the Opposition. Mr Seddon replied at length to Mr Hislop, and concluded a very long speech by advocating a dissolution, in order that a new Parliament might come in, which would restore confidence. The debate was adjourned at 12.55 on the motion of Mr Macarthur.
