A most deliberate suicide took place here about 9 this morning, when Richard Bennett, aged 50, shot himself through the heart with a rifle. Deceased was sitting in a chair, and had placed the muzzle of tbe rifle against his vest, the butt resting on the ground, a piece of string being tied to the trigger, the other end being attached to the top of his boot. In the case Napier Park Racing Glub v. Captain Russell cliam for recovery of stake won by Van Dieman, judgement was given for plaintiff with costs. After the stakes were paid over ifc -was discovered that the horse was ineligible to start. The club then paid the stake a second time to the second horse. Russell refused to refund believing his hone was eligible.
