PARLIAMENT.
.*. — - HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. (PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, June 24The House met at 2.30 p.m. In reply to questions it was stated that the Government expected to have the Manawatu Gorge Railway open for traffic in November. Mr Stewart resumed the debate on the Address-in-Reply. Mr Bryce characterised the debate as unless or worse than unless, as the practice of debating the Address-in-Reply had fallen somewhat into disrepute even in the House of Commons. Before sitting down he suggested that the Minister of Public Works should bring down his statement at the same time as the Budget. Messrs Hutchinson, nnd John McKenzie also spoke in hostile criticism of the speech. Mr Fisher strongly urged a dissolution of Parliament. Mr Fergus had never known the Address-in-Reply debated without some specific motion following it, and he now challenged the leader of the Opposition to table a want-of-con fideuce motion in the Government. A to his speech at Queenstown he had no difference whatever with colleagues over that speech. The address was agreed to on the voices. Sir George Grey moved an amendment praying the Governor to grant a dissolution. On a division the amendment was lost by 39 to 19, and the House rose at 1.30. June 25. The following Bills were introduced and read a first time : Major Steward — A Bill to further amend tbe Dog Registration Act, 1880; Sir G. Grey — A Bill to regulate the Admission of Persons to practise in the Courts of Law, and a Bill to provide for the Election of the Governor of New Zealand. The Minister of Education moved the second reading of Registration of Electors Bill, explaining that it was practically the same as that of last session. The debate was interrupted by the 5.30 adjournment. On the House resuming, Mr Mitchelson delivered the Financial Statement resume of which appears elsewhere at its conclusion. Mr Ballance asked when the discussion on the Financial Statement, which was a long and important one, would be taken ? The Premier said ho was willing to begin it on Tuesday.
