At a recent church parade of the | Ashbur'on Rifles, the Hey. A. Scott, chaplain of the corps, said: — "Ifl were bidden to choose the soldier among you whom I thought would most likely win the Victoria Cross, did the opportunity come, I think I would go to one of your Easter encampments. I would „ observe who was the most assiduous in obeying regulations, who cared least for public opinion, who hid the most backbone, who showed most openly his abhorrence of foul talk; he, in short, who adhered most bravely to the simple rules of Christian duty ; and I think I should not be far wrong iv selecting him as the bravest man." Some of the Palmerston North volunteers are apparently not very scrupulous, if the following from the local Standard be correct :— ' We hear that an enquiry is shortly to be held into the conduct of two members of the Palmerston North Rifles oii Queen's Birthday. It appears New Zealand ammunition was served out to be used in the prize firing, and also to test it, and thise tno conscientious gentlemen, knowing that it was hardly as good as the Euglish ammunition while serving out New Zealand ammunit.on to the others, calmly retained a packet each of the English ammunition for themselves. It is •quite likely their little game would have passed unnoticed had not the •company been told to keep tbe empty •cartridge cases, and these two were observed throwing theirs away.
