Meeting of Ratepayers at Mangaone
A large number of ratepayers met in the school honsß last evening, by invitation of Mr Thos. Shortall, to discuss road matters in connection with No. 5 ward, Manchester Hoad District. Mr Owen Pleasants was voted to the chair, and opened the meeting by reading the advertisement calling it. Mr Shortall then explained that as there were two candidates in the field to represent No. 5 ward, he had taken the liberty of calling the meeting and also inviting the two candidates to attend and have a chat with the ratepayers, "and express their views with reference to the management of affairs in the ward. Mr Pearoe was present,- but Mr Bastin was prevented from attending the meeting through an accident to his trap at Palmerston, which caused considerable disappointment. However, Mr Pearce addressed the meeting, fully explaining what had been done during the past year, the p.'egent position of the ward, Sco., and answered several questions satisfactorily, after which Mr T. Shortall proposed, and Mr Fred Andrew seconded, the the following resolution, " That Mr Pearce be accorded* a vote of thanks and a renewal of confidence that he is a fit and proper person to. further represent No. 5 ward Manchester Eoad District," which was carried unanimously. After a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting dispersed, everyone well pleased at having been present.
