The New Plymouth Murder
(PER UNITED PRESS ABSOCIATjOIf.) New Plymouth, Apni2l. The inquest on the body of Stephen* Maloney, found murdered in therecreation ground on Friday week, wasopened this morning before Mr Kettle,, coroner. Mr Samuel appeared for the prisoner ; Mr Staridiah for the Crown, and Inspector i^ardy ior thepolice. Major Brown acted as interpreter. Mania Kai appeared; in theolothes he had on when arrested With the exception of his boots. There Va» a large attendance of the public. " Mre Carmell, who lives .near deceased'shouse saw him on Friday week between 9 and 10. Maloney always had., his dinner -with them. As he did 1 not come she sent a boy to the house,, who returned saying he was not there: She S9nt again and he waa still absent.. Leo, her son, went next morning, but deceased was not there.; Maloney was in the habit of leaving bis clotho* at her house. She handed over a waistcoat and trousers to the policebelonging to decease. Borne drawersproduced were like those of deceased'?. The vest. produced was like one deceased wore, but was not in, her.possession. Deceased had several pairs of drawers. Maloney was. a quiet old fellow. Noticed him with* a new pair of boots. Never saw the- prisoner before. Witnesses' son €taorge wa» chopping trees in the recreation ground with a hook on th« morning of the day Maloney was missing. John Ciaffy, caretaker of the racecourse adjoining! the Recreation Ground, described the new boot* Maloney bought. Had seen no strange ■ people about the ground on the day of the murder. Deceased had offered to lend him money on two or three occasions, but he had not accepted iU The inquest is again adjourned.
