Brave follows made a gallant effort to block tke water,, and as a last resource the men actually •iood shoulder to shoulder wrth. their backs to the water right along- tho gap, while others shovelled up* tbe- earth, as quickly as they could. Tarpaulins were .stretched across th» breach,, and sand bags piled up against them, but the force of the water canted them away *-
