I PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] Chkistchuech, March 10. the action iur slander, brought hy Dr Mickle against Captain Everest, in the Supreme -Court to-day, the •evidence showed that the plaintiff had attended Mrs Everest for two years for an'semia and concomitant ailments. He prescribed narcotics for sleeplessness, and on the 30th April she ..took •an overdose, and slept so long that her f riends sent for Dr Mipkle. When he was in the room Captain Everest •came home slightly the worse for drink. He expressed no surprise, -and was friendly to Dr Mickle. After- . ward he made statements to several persons, accusing Dr Mickle of improper conduct with Mrs Everest and -of procuring a miscarriage. Shortly after he told two persons that what he had said was untrue and had been •spoken under the influence of driak. He made a written statement to that «ffect. . Later on, howevec, he again repeated the statement. Dr Mickle denied Captain Everest's accusations, ■and his denial was supported by the «viden ! ce; The defendant did riot -appear nor defended the action. The Jury retired at 2,55 p.m., and after an -absence of— eight minutes, returned a "verdict for the plaintiff, with damages *it £1000, Mr Gh-(*. Stead, the fore•man, stated that the jury wisHed to •mark their sense of the defendant's -action by giving judgment for the full "* mount claimed.
