♦ (per united press association.) Chkistchubch, February 19. The defalcations of G. R. Bowman, solicitor, who left about three weeks ago amount to £600. Proceedings for larceny as a bailee will be taken against him. The Lyttelton School Committee, which had a strong dispute with the Board of Education about the appointment of a head master, has recommended Mr Thomas Ritchie, 8.A., whose name was not amongst those approved by the Board.. Failing him, they recommend Mr E. W. Just, whose name was added to the list by the Board on his protesting against being left out. Auckland, February 19. The Kaihu Railway Commission closed its inquiry to-day, having taken evidence since tbeir return to Auckland. Mr Macarthur, one of the Commissioners, loaves to-morrow for Wellington. The oratorio "Elijah" was produced to-night by the Auckland Choral Society at the Choral Hall, with Mr Santley m the title i*6le. The performance was a great success, and the hall was densely crowded. This Day. Mr Napier, acting on behalf of Te Kooti, intends immediately to bring an action against the Government for false imprisonment. Damages will probably be laid at £20,000. The venue of the cuse may be laid in Dunedin or Wellington. Invbbcabgill, February 20. The Customs returns of passenger traffic via Bluff, for the months of November, December and January, show arrivals 2933, exceeding the departures by 1633. These figures show the Exhibition has caused an increase, and afford a pleasing contrast to the exodus of two years ago.
