The Feilding Star TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1890. Mr Bryce at Hamilton

On Saturday laßt Mr Bryoe addressed the electors of Waipa, at Hamilton. It will be seen by the resume furnished by the Press Association that the hon. gentleman »till holds the same uncompromising views on the economical management of the finances of the State, for which he has always been so much admired ,and respected both by political friends aud foes. He does not dilly dally- with the point at issue, but pushes straight home in dealing with any suggested alterations in the Education Act to suit the wishes of any particular religious sect or body. He is opposed to yielding to the demands of the Roman Catholics, because as the Education Act is a State institution it must therefore be secular. . Besides, if the request of one denomination were granted they could not logically refuse •:the same to other denominations. On the question of federation he agrees with tbe majority of his fellow colouists, that while it would be a good thing for Australia tbe probable gains ta New Zealand would be very doubtful. We gather from the phrase *' Why should not those who enjoyed the accumulations of labor in the shape . .of property pay. specially for its protec r rjioH';. ? ' that Mr BiryittE upholds, the'

Property Tax, but at the same time he shows a way to getting rid of that burden, by retrenchment, or sending men to Parliament pledged to abolish the tax, although he does not approve of the latter mode, evidently hecause without 'retrenchment the tax was indispensable. Wo coufess that we like the tone of the speoch, which is'prac tical and honest, and therefore entirely characteristic of the man.
