The Times-Parnell Commission

♦; By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. {PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION, j London, February 14. Referring to ithe report of the Special Commission the Chronicle states that this history of the articles, Parnellism and Crime, is theinost colossal fiasco of political journalism.' . " \ • The Daily Telegraph considers that while Parnellites have been pronounced guilty no new points have been advanced, and new members of the Irish party are virtually acquitted of complicity in crime. • The Standard says the defendants have been shown to be morally responsible for the worst of the crimes committed in Ireland. The Times states that though the report . is colorless and guarded in judicial language, it thoroughly confirms the main, part of their case. The general effeot of their charges, it asserts, remains unshaken, and 1 it believes that the country will accept the judgment completely as confirming the arguments they had urged.' . February 16. In the House of Commons^' Mr W. H. Smith stated that the Government had not yet decided what action will be taken in connection with -the report of the TimesParneil Commission. Some of the Tory papers are urging the expulsion of 44 members unless they are prosecuted for alleged conspiracy of crime in Ireland. The Standard opposes this step, although it deplores the political morality which permits 44 members to associate with the party in order to debate Parnell's amendment to the Address-in-Reply. Sir R. Webster, speaking at Oxford, expressed hia pleasure at the personal charges against Mr Parneil having failed but he considered others proved. The Freeman' Journal and the Pall Mali Gazette, in their articles criticising the report" of The Times Parneil Commission, claim' that the members of the Irish party haye vindicated their characters. -
