A rifle match, Scotchmen against Allcomers, will be fired in Hokitika to-morrow. The New Zealand Rifle Association have made a financial success of their meeting, and it is expected that there will be a balance of over £400. A telegram states that Mr Vanini, the caterer to the Rifle Association, has brought an action against the Association, claiming £100 damages, for alleged breach of agreement, principally as regards the number of competitors. The case is to be heard on February. Instances of Volunteers being drummed out of the service are rare in this colony, but thirteen members of the Tuapeka Rifles have just been dis missed by the Defence Department for unfair practices: During tho volley firing between different oorps of the colony some members of the local company fired more than the ten rounds issued by the officer in charge, j ■consequently too many hits were registered on the targets. It is reported that the Captain will lose his commission through failing to put in the number of parades. Much regret is felt by volunteers in Canterbury, at the sad death of Hos-pital-Orderly Coombes at the Exhibition Rifle Meeting in Dunedin. He was much respected, and always to the fore when ambulance assistance •was required in the camp or. field. He was an old soldier in the 30th Regiment, and had served in Canada and leaves a widow and four children. A subscription was at once started in camp for there, and the funeral took place with military honours on Saturday. • - -
