PALMERSTON SPORTS.
The annual Caledonian Sports at Palmerston North, were held yesterday on the Show Ground and, considering the great number of people who went away by train to Wellington ,Foxton, and Wanganui, and that there were several church picnics, &c, there was a very good attendance. For several of the events there were no competitors, and these, consequently did not come off. Those which did, however, were well contested, and the sports on the whole were a great success. The Fire Brigade Band, under the able leadership pf Mr F. Clemens, enlivened the proceedings with some capital music, and everything passed off in a very enjoyable manner. The following are the results of the events competed for at the sports : — .■ . . Boys' Race, under 12. — F. Lyon, 1 ; W. Weight, 2. Eleven entries. President's Handicap, 100 yards. — W. Jewell, 1 ; F. E. Mann, 2. Caledonian Handicap, £ mile. — J. F. Manning, 1 ; G. B. Burton, 2. /Three acceptances. Bagpipe Music. — E. A. Chisholm, 1 ; A. Jack, 2. Two competitors. Boys' Race, under 15. — H. Hankins, 1 ; F. Mowlem, 2. Twelve started. After the race Hankins owned that he was over' age, and gave up the right of the prize to Mowlem. ' Hurdle Handicap, 220 yards.— R. Oliphant, 1 ; H. S. Bailey, 2. Walking Handicap, 1 mile. — A. Rush, R. Rush, 2. J. H. Annan breasted the tape along with A. Rush, but disqualified himself by breaking the walk. : Running High JuMP.--Meyrick (scratch) sft lin, 1 ; H. S. Bailey (scratch), sft, 2. Caledonian Handicap, 220 yards. — W. Jewell. 1; W. A. Bailey, 2; J. Humphries, 3. Highland Fling. — G. Lang, 1 ; G. Tambull, 2 . South, 3. Sword Dance.--G. Lang, 1 ; G. Turnbull, 2. Caledonian Handicap, 440 yards. — R. Oliphant, 1 ; J. Humphries, 2. J. Rush was the only other starter, but fell out before the end of the race, and so lost the prize. Putting the Stone.— Dalton, 35ft 7in, 1 ; Bressanan, 35ft lin, 2nd ; Rush, 34ft 2in 3rd. Hop, Step, and Jump. — O'Leary, 41ft. lfin, Ist ; Reuben (Maori), 41ffc, 2nd ; H. S. Bailey, 39ft 9in,' 3.; Tossing the Caber.— Rush, 22ft llin, Dalton, 18ft 2in, 2. There were six competitors but these were the only ones that burned the caber over. WANGANUI CALEDONIAN SPORTS. The Wanganui Caledonian Society's Sports were held yesterday, and the attendance was good. The acceptances were not good owing, no doubt, to the handicapping^ the complaints, about which Mnongst the competitors were very loud., The_ following are the results :— 100 Yards' Handicap.^ — Mmmix (3yds),

Mmmix (syds), 1; Newth(4yds) r 2; Murray (7yds)" 3. Harmer (12j'ds) won .the second heat, Parr, Iveson, and Fanthorpe were among the starters. . Quarter-Mile Handicap. — Murray (14---yds), 1; Newth (10yds), 2 ; Olliver (25yds) 3. . " Caledonian Mile Handicap. — Fitzgerald (125 yds), 1; Fanthorpe (125 yds), 2; Power (45yds), 3 ; J. Whiteinan (45yds), 3. Vaultiiig with Pole. — McFarlane and Green divided at 10ft 4in. 220 Hurdles.— Olliver, 1; J. J. Bryce, 2 ; C. E. Bryce, 3.
