The death la announced from England of Mr Samuel Fielden, aged 73, a Todmorden cottea spinner. Deceased left a fortune of between £3,000,000 and £4,0d0,000 aleiliug. Captain Edwin telegraphed at 9 a.m. to-day : — Warnings for easterly gales and rain hold good at all places north of East Cape, Taupo and New Plymouth, and have been sent to all places from thence southward to Lyttelton and Hokitika. We have been informed by a geutleman residing some distance up the river that Ruapehiu and Ngaruhoe were distinctly seen smoking on Sunday moruing. Large volumes of smoke were seen coming from both craters. — Chronicle. A fire broke out early on Sunday morning on board the s.s. Arawa, which was lying alongside the Wellington wharf, but was quickly extinguished by the Brigade, verylittle damage being done. The fire broke out in a store room adjoining the engine room. John Eandell, aged 23, a fellmonger, while bathing in the Hutt River, Wellington, on Sunday, instantly sunk before his companion could render him any assistance. Deceased was only married on Christmas Day, and a most sober, industrious and energetic young man. A Southern paper remarking on some cases heard in its town says :— " The privilege of allowing prisoners to give evidence on their own behalf is proving a valuable" help to justice. We have not he ml of a' single case where it has lod to an acquital; while on the contrary it has strengthened many week cases, and caused not a few convictions." Messrs Harcourt and Co., stock and station agents, Wellington, report as follows : — During - the month of December we experienced quite a demand for land of all descriptions. Small freehold farms from 300 to 409 acres in extent and partly improved find ready sale at moderate prices. Leaseholds capable of carrying from 3000 to 4000 sheep are enquired for with few offering. The prospects for the new year are promising. The excess of immigration over emigration is beginning to have a beneficial effect, and tins, added to the satisfactory prices realised for produce of all classes, must create a demand for agricultural and grazing land; hitherto holders have been asking prices beyond what would give a fair return for the capital invested. We report having sold " Westbrook Farm," near Eltham, 125 acres freehold and 200 acres leasehold, to Mr J. W. Alexander for i' 1050; allotments 5 and 6 Willis street, Wellington, with a frontage of 00 feet, to Messrs P. Hayman and Co. for i' 450 0; allptment 7, part of town acre 341, Wellington, with six-roomed house, to Mrs Urwin for £275. — Wellington, 4th January, 1890. Cobbe and Darragh have opened up a fresh lot of paperhacgings in a vanetv of patterns, and at very moderate prices.
