The South Canterbury Times, the the oldest established, is the other evening paper. Wellington, This Day. Mr Mitchelson has received a telegram from Sir H. Atkinson, saying he is much better. The Premier talks of returning, btit Ministers are trying to dissuade him from coming back until he is thoroughly established in health. The land sales for December show a great falling off in receipts in Auckland, which lead the colony in this respect in December and November. A conference of Judges of the Native Land Court is being held here. Chkistchi t bch. This Day. A number of booksellers have to appear before the E.M. Court, to-morrow, on a charge of selling poJlufced literature. Auckland, January 6. At a public contest of reapers and binders, held at Mangare, five machines competed . The first prize was awarded to the Bradford and the second to the Eeid and Gray machines, the others being commended, A resident of Whatawhata named Iwerson has drawn the first prize in an art union held at Home. The prize is a tiara of diamouds valued at £200. The steeplechaser Kneecap has been purchased by Mr" W. K. Wilson., of Adelaide. The price paid has not train spired.
