The Feilding Star SATURDAY, JANUARY 4, 1890.
"■'Although' the year 1889 may -be j.lbokod.Kiack upon as remarkably prosperous asVfar as this locality is concerned, yet the year, we have just entered upon promises even to be better than its; predecessor. Apart from the increase in stock and land prepared for cropping, which may fje expected in the ordinary course of even tf*, the num ber and extent of useful public works which will be undertaken and completed by local bodies during the ensuing two] ve -month sj will be very great in themselves, .and of . money ;yalu.e,\ as the ; ; fqllpwing.J figures will show. In the construction of roads and bridges the. .Maiichester Eoad Board will spend £5250, the Kiwitea Eoad Board £5600, the Wanganui Harbor Board £600,J and if the JFeilditig Borough Council elects to put bridges over the Oroua Eiver and Kiwitea .stream,, that willj mean about £5000 more, making a total of say y£i 5, 250', every shilling of which may be looked upon as uioney?safely invested in directly or indirectly J reproductive works. The Government are doing their share by Opening up for sale some very yalu ' able land in the back country. Twenty thousand acres, situated north of the : WOstJ Waitapu Block, between tb e Kiwitea District and Sandon Speeiai Settlement, in the Otamakapua Tupiiae Block ; also ten thousand acres situated in. Apiti and Pohangina Survey District; between the Wanganui Harbor Board, and Feilding Special .Settlement Blocks. The survey of the first named land is already hearty completed, while it is expected the road lines of the second lot will he in a very forward state within a few mouths. ..Not' only does this mean the circulation of a large sum of ready mbneyj but,- what is still better in the■iong run, it implies the introduction of settlers of the very best class on the newly opened couutry. We say the best class advisedly, because hone but men possessed ot some capital, and more courage and energy, are likely.- to make the venture.' It is in the favor of s^ch men that there are : already good roads' in existence leading to the lands referred' to, and beyond the clearing of the hush thf) difficulties of making a home are comparatively trifling. That, however, is outside, the province of this article What we desire to impress on "our readers is the fact that with the exercise of moderate industry aud prudence, the abstention from any .outside speculation in the bogus companies A Jfor; the 'benefit of farmers " which start up, like mushrooms, at the first glimmer of the sunshine of prosperity ; and' last by 'showing " confidence, in . themselves, and their country that they can help to make the prosperity of of 1889 " pale, its ineffectual fires " before that of 1890.
