I PER "UNITED PIIEBS ASSOCIATION. 1 Auckland. December 30Two women and a man, all Maoris, died near Russell from the effects of " eating poisonous honey. A number of other Natives were also affected,but are now out of danger. - A youth named Herbert Nicholas, 17 years of age, has "been drowned n6ar Howick through falling into a creek. Dunedin. December 30. Mr 9 Uobertson, of Cromwell, is sunposed to have committed suicide in the Clutha river. George Murray, manager of the Dunstan Hotel, ,was drowned iv the Clutha while bathing. , Tjmabu, Decembe 30. A case of malignant diphtheria is reported from Temuka. The patient, a young .woman, recently a mother, died in Timaru Hospital yesterday . Deceased's mother was charged at the court thi* morning with abandoning deceased's infant boy, leaving it in the passage of the Salvation Army Barracks. In reply she ■ said she would not take home a bastard.. ,A.s the child had not suffered the case - was dismissed. Gisborne, December 30. . A stevedore named Robert Douglas - arrived yesterday by steamer from Napier. He had been drinking somewhat on the passage, and, though apparently otherwise in good health, was* hardly sober, Duriug the morning he went into an hotel and expired. At the inquest the jury returned • a verdict, in accordancewith the medical testimony, that death?, was due to alcoholic coma and failure of the heart's action. Masterton, December 30. Hugh Gallagher, labourer, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital 'on Saturday with his throat cut badly with a razor at Mangaone at 2 o'clock the same morning. The wound was stitched by Dr McLennan. Gallagher was lately an inmate of the Wellington Lunatic Asylum. He will " probably recover.
