Fight between Slavin and Smith
« ILLTREATMENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN. ' ' f ' A COWARDLY SPORTSMAN. By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. (per united press association.) Received December 23, 12.30 p.m. London, December 23 The fight between Slavin and Smith came off near Bruges at*B o'clock yesfcer-, day, morning, and -lasted for 21 minutes. Smith was often down and once left the ring, but returned and claimed the fight. After 14 rounds had been fought a dispute occurred between Smith and the second, but the Referee refused to stop the fight. Thereupon he was mobbed. Owing to the dreadful conduct "of the Smith party the Referee was compelled to decline the appeal for a drawn combat. Slavin was cudgelled by the roughs, and a telegram to the Sportsman announced he was dead, but a latter message says he was only slightly hurt. Later, It is stated that a well known sportsman furnished the roughs who accompanied Smith's party to Belgium. Every time .Slavin forced Smith into his own corner, the roughs maltreated the Australian. This occurred several rounds before the last. It was known in London before the fight it was intended to illuse Slavin. The latter was comparatively uninjured. It is thought he was hit with knuckled . fists. Smith is ill.
