We regret exceedingly to learn from the Secretary of the school committee that Mrs Li'ssaman has resigned her position as head mistress of the Feilding State School. Mr Dignan, the manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland, was married yesterday at Bunnythorpe,to Miss Aldrich. We wish the happy couple every joy and happiness. The Feiiding Brass Band have had in active rehearsal for some time the great Temperance drama of " Ten Nights in a Bar Room," and will produce it on Boxing and race nights, in the Assembly Rooms For further particulars see posters and advertisement. Tho sale of stock held yesterday by Messrs Stevens and Gorton was not well attended, and bidding was consequently dull. Very few lots were quitted. This was owing to the nearness of the Christmas holidays. Some years ago a juryman on this coast was asked why a notoriously guilty accused had not been convicted. His reply was characteristic, " I have served on fourteen jurias and never found a man guilty yet — and I never will." He doesn't serve on juries now. H.M.S. Pinafore will be played in t';e Assembly Rooms on Monday the 30th instant. by the Marton Amateur Dramatic Society. Box plan may be seen at Mr Carthew's stationers shop. The advertisement appears in another column. We draw particular attention to a new advertisement which appears to-day from Mr Fagan, who announces a special sale of a new consignment of ladies', gentlemen's and children's boots and shoes. The various lots must be sold as the proprietor believes in small profits and quick returns. A useful addition has been made by MiFrank Bray to his hairdressing establishment in the shape of a shampooing aparatus which was fitted up yesterday. This is a splendid " refresher" during the hot weather. Mr Bray has a. lot of silver mounted amber mouth pieces just to hand. His new adyertisement will appear on Tuesday. We are glad to learn that Mr Macarthur has succeeded.in obtaining a boon for this district in the shape of a resident Magistrate. It is intended that the new R.M. shall reside in Palmerston, and will have charge of the district on this side of the Rangitikei river. This attention to the wants of the public is highly commendable, and we (Manawatu Times) have to congratulate Mr Macarthur on the success of his efforts, which will doubtless be appreciated by his constituents. The whole of Mr Garthew's wonderful stock of Christmas toys has now been uupacked and placed on view ready for dis-. posal. It comprises selections from the best manufacturers in Europe, and as Mr Carthew is a direct importer, he is able to offer them all at the most surprisingly low prices. In proof of this statement we commend to our readers the Shilling, Sixpenny, and Threepenny tables, which each contain literally thousands of the most surprising novelties. How they can be made and sold for the money is a marvel. We say nothing about the magic lanterns, the musical instruments, and the magnificent stock of prize and toy books, because they must be seen to be appreciated. We would suggest an early visit. A meeting of the State School concert committee -was held on Thursday evening last. Mr Strachan presided, in 'the absence of the Rev. G. Wilks, and handed in a statement of sale of tickets so far as the school was concerned, and Mr Reading the secretary presented a balance sheet, showing the nett proceeds to be .£'l9 10s. The following are the items : — Receipts — Money taken at doors, £9 16s 6d ; sale of tickets by scholars, £13 5s 6d ; other sales, £1 6s; subscription by a friend, 2s 6d; total, £M 10s 6d. Expenditure — Rent of hall and piano, £2 ; printing and advertising, £2, 10s; cartage, 4s; cards and minute book, 2s 3d ; stationery and postage, Is 9d ; stage properties, 2s 6d ; balance, £19 10s ; total £24 10s 6d. A resolution was passed that hearty thanks be conveyed to the teachers of the school for their valuable services in connection with the concert, and to the Foresters for the kind use of the seats from their hall. The above statement and balance sheet was adopted, and pending the next meeting of the school committee it was decided to lodge the cash with the Bank of Australasia as a special fund account. The committee are to be congratulated on this result. Yesterday's New Zealand Times says : — It is expected that the wool trade of this povt next season will show a very largo increase on that of previous seasous. With the view of meeting tho de•inands thus mode, the Harbour Board have decided to extend the wool jetty on Waterloo-quay, so as to give berthing accommodation for two more ships, and plans of the proposed extension were laid before the Board yesterday and approved. The cost of the work is expected to be about £6000. Cobbe and Darragh have opened up a fresh lot of paperhangings in a great variety of patterns, and at very moderate pricos.
