Feilding Borough. Council

INSTALLATION OF MAYOR. The Council met at noon yesterday. Present — The retiring Mayor (Dr Monckton), the Mayor elect (Cr Lethbridge), Crs Hutherford, Goodbehere, Watts, S. J. Thompson, J. C. Thompson, and Haybittle. - * "' The retiring Mayor, Dr Monckton, briefly introduced his successor, Mr Lethbridge. He congratulated him on his election, and said if it was his good fortune to be again elected as a Councillor he • would do his best to work with him- to further Ine interests of the Borough^ Mr Lethbridge having made the 'usual declaration took the chair. He said, he hoped they would all work harmoniously, together in furthering the interests ; of the Borough. He referred to the approaches to the town, and said that as we were dependent on the country for our support it was the duty of -the Council, as representing the ratepayers, to keep the roadsleading into J Feilding in good order. Bridging the Kiwitea stream, and possibly the Oroua river at the railway bridge, were burning- questions, and he hoped by keeping down expenditure and out of debt to make these works possible. Cr J. C. Thompson said he thought Councillors should give expression to their feelings of approbation for the energy and application to his duties of the retiring Mayor, Dr Monckton, who had been indefatigable during" his term "of office. Cr Haybittle briefly 'congratulated Mr ' Lethbridge on his election as Mayor, and' expressed the opinion, that when his year of office had expired the Council would be able to look back with pleasure on - -what had tak&n place during that time. He believed his election would cause the work of the Council to be done harmoniously: The Mayor thanked the Councillors for their expressions of goodwill and remarked that Cr J. C. Thompson had anticipated ■ him in his remarks anent the retiring 1 Mayor . . Proposed "by Cr E. Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Rutherford; That the Borough offices be closed from December 24th, 1889,'t0 January 2nd, 1890. — Carried. The Council then adjourned. -
