. The Inspector of Mines has" been sent from the Thames to Puhipuhi to make a further report on the recent discoveries. The only reason why the Government does not proclaim the district at once is that 7000 acres of valuable kauri were burned last year, and they are anxious to protect the forest as much as -possible, and not throw it open to the incursion of miners until a real field is proved. December 2. The Exhibition to-day was very largely attended, the attendance being estimated' at 9080, of whom 7603 paid for admission. Fifteen members of the Victorian Legislature reached town this evening, and were taken to the Exhibition by the Executive Commissioner. All express themselves highly delighted with what they have so far seen. . ' Wellington, December 2. The Tongariro passed Farewell Spit at 7 a.m. and should reach here about 4 p.m. The Commissioner of Police ha 9 received a telegram stating that a body supposed to be that of the late Major Jackson,- M.H.R. for Waipa, has been found in a cave between Mokau and Kawhiat The body is not yet indentified. The place is not easily reached, but a steamer will probably be sent from Waitara to Kawhia to convey to the former place, where it is intended to hold an inquest. This Day. The Government have received a telegram from Auckland to the effect th-it an assay of ore froii the Puhipuhi silver mine, made at Wairongomai, Te Aroha, made at tlie rate of 26ozs to the ton. The Minister of Lands considers it probable that the return is more correct than any other that has been submitted. Auckland, December 2.' A cable messag announces the death of Mr John Milne, well known in commercial circles m Auckland. He left Auckland in April last;on a trip to England, and was returning, when -he died from pleurisy on the voyage between Melbourne and Sydney. His remains are to be brought to Auckland for interment. A daughter of Mr Milne's is married to the Rev Mr Spencer, of Duuedin. D. B. Richard, eharebroker, was ; _com«" mitted for trial to-day on another series of four charges of uttering promissory notes, the total sum represented being L9O. .■-:■■■ Chuistchurch, December 2.
