Volunteer Items
Parades for the Manchester Rifles during November are published today. Mr E. Johnston, formerly of the Palmerston North Rifles, has been offered a lieutenancy in the Wanganui City Rifles. Private J. Turner has been offered a similar position.
Sir Henry Lock visited Auckland for a few hours on Saturday last. The vice-regal party were received by a body guard of volunteers under Lieut. Col. Stepherd. At the next parade of the Manchester Bines the names of several recruits will be submitted for approval. Writing in the Press, " Si ider" says of the Wellington Volunteer officers : —While a few of the offioere are very good and others passably efficient, many are extremely inefficient. There is also a great difficulty in getting officer*, and very few of the right sort can now be induced to undertakithe duties, and the consequence ' ifthe recent accessions to the force in that respect have not' been at al desirable for the good of the service
