V.A.T.C. SPRING MEETING,

Spring Meeting, and about 12,000 persons were present. The racing throughout was very exciting, the success of Mr White being almost phenomenal. Dunkeld ran a great colt in the Caulfield Stakes. Caulfield Stakes, of 500 soys, with a sweepstake of 5 soys each ; 1 mile 1 furlong ; weight for age. Drednonght, by Chester — Trafalgar, 3yrs, 7st 111 b (Hales) 1 Carbine, by Musket — Mersey, 4yrs, 9st 2 Dunkeld (7st 111 b) and Bravo (9st 41b) ran a dead heat for third place. Don Giovan, Chicago, Pakeha, Box, Tradition, Benzon, Silyerton, and Scottish Chief also ran. Drednought won easily by two lengths. Time, 2min. fsec. The Great Foal Stakes, 4 furlongs. — Victor Hugo, by Chester — Kathleen (Hales), 1; Deerwood, 2; Harbor Light, 3. Six others started. Victor Hugo simply romped home in 52£ sec. Caulfield Guineas, a sweep of 10 soys each with 500 added ; 1 mile. Mr White's b g Rudolph, by MartiniHenry — Rusk, Bst (Hales) ... 1 Mr Brodribb's b c Prince Conscrt, by Richmond — Qneen Consort, Bst 51b 2 Mr E. Browne's b c Carrington, by Gang Forward — Josephine, 3st slb 3 Merriment, Adventuress, Copenhagan, and Montalto also started. At the post 7 to 4 was laid on Rudolph, 6 to 1 anything else. Prince Consort was indulged with the lead for three furlongs, when Copenhagan went to the front, with the favorite lying third. Fairly in the straight Rudolph rushed to the front and won by a length, the same distance separating the second and third horses. Then followed Merriment, Adventurous, Copenhagan, and Montalto. Time, lmin. 49£ sec. Busaco won the Australian Hunters' Cup, and Maelstrom the Toorak Handicap. Melbourne. October 12. At Tattersals last evening £4000 was taken about Bravo for the Caulfield Cup at 100 to 14. Don Giovan has advanced to 100 to 8 for the same race. For the V.R.C. Derby, Dunkeld was backed to win £300 at 6 to 1. Benzon is being heavily backed for the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 8. Carbine was backed to win £300 at 10 to 1, after which he shortened to 8 to 1. October 14. A vast majority of the horses at.Caulfield on Saturday were non-triers. Power threw away a chance of winning the Guineas by his bad riding of Carrington, whom he blamed for running unkindly. Dunkeld has gone back to 100 to 5 for the Caulfield Cup. Volga has been scratched for the Caulfield Cup and Centaur for the Melbourne Cup. Bravo is still favorite for the Caulfleld Cup at 100 to 16 ; Don Gioyan is quoted at 100 to 8, The Charmer and Moorebank 100 to 7, Scottish Chief and Meteor 100 to 6. For the V.R.C. Derby, 2 to 1 is laid on Drednought, 6 to 1 Richelieu, Signapore and Dunkeld.
