Saturday, October 5, 1889. Present — Messrs Macarthur (chairman), Lethbridge, Pearce, -Eeeve, and Purkiss. The nrinutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From J. W. Watson, asking the Board ' to make some provision: from the Charitable Aid fund for two boys named Foster,, ■who were in his charge and were totally^, unprovided for by their parents. From F. Berry, asking his name to be .- put on rate roll. — Granted.- - " " 'J\_ „ From the Natives at Ecu Ben, giying^J^ permission to make a road through a por^'^i tion of the Toko reserve, but objecting to " the road as surveyed by the Board. ; Balance sheets from the Auditor-Gen- _ eral signed and approved. • ' ' ■ ' - : From the Secretary Kiwitea Eoad Board, re Cheltenham Cross Eoad asking - if the Manchester Eoad Board will consent to the appointment of a Commission to apportion the cost of maintenance, &c. " : From C. Hunt, re allowance of 25s per acre for felling roadline, asking for more. From W. Master, asking when the Board would meet. " ' : Same, drawing attention to the state of the Stoney Creek Eoad. - From Gaius Brewer, applying for permission to fall bush on road line. — Granted on the Board's usual terms. Telegram from G. Wheeler, asking ihe Board to defer the Onepuhi bridge question. ! until his arrival. (Mr Wheeler did nob, attend and the subject was not discussed.) Telegram from the Secretory to the Treasury, re duplicates for Eegistraf-Gen-eral. j From the Engineer to the Board, re swamp on Beid's line. From J. Pearson, asking permission to erect on the road line a protective fence ! for a live fence. , From Gardner Bros., applying for permission to fell bush on the road line. — Granted on the Board's usual terms. Mr Masters waited on the Board in support of his application for work to be done on the Stoney Creek road. Mr Macarthur, the chairman, said he would have a resolution to propose 1 later on which would deal with the matter in a satisfactory way to all parties. Mr Masters expressed his satisfaction and withdrew. Proposed by Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, seconded by J. Purkiss, That J. Pearson receive permission to erect his fence for sections No. 27 and 28 Makino road, 2 feet on the road to protect his live fence, during the pleasure of the Board". — Carried. Ec the application of the Kiwitea Eoad in the matter of a commission to arrange proportion of liability for maintenance of Cheltenham Cross road, it was Proposed by' Mr -Macarthnr, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the Clerk inform the Kiwitea Eoad Board the Manchester Eoad Board is content with matters as they now stand, and that it is for the Kiwitea Eoa.i Beard to ask for a com"mission if they wish the Manchester Eoad Board to be compelled to pay a proportion of the cost of the Cheltenham Cross road.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Eeeve, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That : tenders be. called for th& formation of Harrison's. road.— Carried;. no. 5 ward. The chairman i-ead the clauses in the amended Public Works Act bearing on the point of roads on the Eailway Eeserve alongside the line. He then read the resolution which follows Mr Macarthur spoke in explanation,, and pointed out that by a petition forwarded to the Board 50 ratepayers'were in favor of having the road to Bunnythorpe made fronting sections in the ward. A general conversation then took place. Mr Macarthur reminded the Board that this would be the last loan No; 5 ward. "would be likely to. get ancfc therefore th© Board must be careful to see that no roads were left out of the schedule. Mr Pearce said there was an idea among some of the ratepayers that, the roads could be made for less money than appeared in the schedule. ,- ? • The chairman said he did not think all the money need be spent/ and every possible saving would be made. Proposed by Mr D. H. Macarthur, seconded by Mr W. G. Pearce, That the chairman be authorised to take the: necessary steps to have the road from Oroua river to Bunnythorpe on both sides of the railway line legalised, under clause 5 of the Public Works Act Amendments Act, 1889, and to take the necessary steps for the roads as per the original schedule with exception of items s,jwhich is hereby altered to " To construct the road from the crossing at Bunnythorpe station to Bailey's crossing on the north side of the railway line along. the Manchester Block frontage.— Carried. Th'« following is the original schedule referred to, No. 5 now b%ing altered as above :— l. To construct 260 chains of ths Taonui road, from railway linetcr.Fefld ing-Ashurst road, .£520; 2. To construct 170 chains of Forjong's road, from Taonui road to Oroua river, .£410; 3. To construct 420 chains Eeid's Line, from Oroua Eiver to the eastern boundary of No. 5 Ward, £1345; 5. , £605 10s; 6. To construct 230 chains Stoney Creek road, from Bunnythorpe to the eastern boundary of No. 5 Ward, £589 10s ; 7: To construct 40 chains BunnythorpeAshurst road, from Bunnythorpe to the eastern boundary of No. 5 Ward, ,£.1,60 ; total of loans, £4000.,-;, " " ; Proposed by Mr Jl'tPurkiss, seconded by Mr F. Lethbridge, seconded by Mr J. Purkiss, That the Maoris at Tokorangi, signing the letter to the Board, be informed that the Board- is taking the land under the Public Works Act, and cannot now alter road line. — Carried. RE ONEFOHI.BRIDGE. The chairman read "a clause under the new Public Works Act, giving power to local bodies to levy a rate without faking a poll of ratepayers.
