(per united press association.) Dunedin, October 7James Pithers, a newspaper runner, lately employed as a gardener, committed suicide at Roßlyn by shooting himself with a gun. He had been much depressed in spirits since his return from Sydney, whither he had gone on a visit to an only, relatiye there a month ago. His mind was slightly unhinged. He was 5* years of age and unmarried. Intimation has been received from the Austral Company of Victoria to proceed at one« with the construction of an Eiffel Tower at the Exhibition. Auckland, October 7. During last night the safe at the Avondale Bailway station was removed, but the thieves, who are as yet unknown, were alarmed by the barking of dogs, and dropped the prize before they had gone far. The contents were found intact, the safe not having been opened. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company sent four boxes of sovereigns of the value of £20,000 to San Francisco by the Manposa to«day, also a large quantity of flax. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board' have decided to hold a public inquiry on Friday next into the circumstances of the death of a woman named Howe at the hospital. It 19 alleged that an operation was performed on the woman without any previous consultation, as required by the rules and without the consent of her husband, who was complained in the matter. This Day. Donald McAlister, 75 years of age, farmer, dropped down dead on Saddle hill last night. He was one of the oldest residents in the district and is single. Wellington, This Day. In course of an interview this morning the Major stated there was no special reason for taking this step } but he wished to be relieved from the cares of office.
