The Wreck at Starbruck Island

PRIVATIONS OF SURVIVORS. I PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Auckland, September 16. The Wainui, which arrived to-day from Samoa, brings as passengers a portion of the shipwrecked crew of the ship Garston, comprising Captain Pye, the master ; Bruce, second mate; Aunesley, third mate ; aud six seamen. The Garston was wrecked at Starbuck Island on the 17th July, and the crew, numbering 28, left in two boats — one in charge of the capt. and the other in command of the first mate. The captain's boat reached Wallis Island, west of Samoa, on 9th August, and its occupants were then iv a very weak condition, after a 23 dayo' passage, during which they endured terrible privations ; all the provisions they had were 301 bof salt meat and 201 bof biscuits. They had very little water on board, but rain fell frequently, which they saved in their oilskin coats. Just before the poor fellows sighted Waiiis Island they had arranged to cast lots to determine which of them should be sacrificed to keep the others alive. The mate's boat has not siuce been heard of. Captain Pyo, Messrs Bruce and Annesley, aud six seamen of the wrecked ship Garston left for Sydney by the Tarawera. A sum of money was raised by subscription amongst the shipping people, and presented to the captain.
