The merchants "- of Mark Lane have petitioned the Government to suppress the practice of picketing The Dock Companies declare that the workmen of the East End of London are under a reign of terror. September 10. The Dock Companies assert they have reached the limit of coDcession, which they calculate will c >st th-m £70,000 per annum. The city men assert that the extra expense will not be more than £20,000. Negotiations with the shipowners are suspended until the Lord Mayor has completed his work of mediation. Burns says the support of the Australian colonies has proved the back bone of the strike. The press comment on the splendid donations from Australia in aid of the strikers, contrasted with the empty motions of sympathy from America. Thirty wharf- owners have conceded the men's terms. I In consequence of the strike, the wool sales have been postponed until the 24th instant. All arrivals till then will be available. The situation with regard to the strike is unchanged. Owing to the liberality of the Australian contributions, money is plentiful. September 11. Cardinal Manning is trying to arrange that the increase conceded to the men by the Dock Companies shall begin on November 1 instead of January 1, as the directors stipulate. The N.Z. Shipping Company intend to sue the Dock Company for £10,000 damages on account of the detention of the Ruapehu. The Firemen and Sailors' Union have announced that in future they will only permit refrigerator engineers to work on New Zealand frozen meat cargoes, and that only on condition they are not touched until the strike is over.
