The Stock Market
CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. Chhistchubch, August 14 Weather dull ; attendance very larg< good business done in most departments. Stoke Cattle.— There was a limited eutry, comprising chiefly small farmers' lots, which did not meet with at all a willing market. Comparatively few dairy cows were sold of Bpecial merit. Fat Cattle. — There was a heavy entry, some prime beef being offered, which in better classes sold freely up to 298 per lOOlbs. The sale dragged considerably at first ; but on some of J. Grigg's fine animals, and others bred by Birdling, entering the ring, there was a good demand. Inferior quality had in many instances to be withdrawn. Store Sheep. — There was a small entry of store sheep, and the prices obtained do not afford a criterion. Fat Sheep. — A very heavy entry of moderate quality. Three was a fair demand for anything approaching superior quality for freezing. Prices however, suffered where quality was at all doubtful. As there were no sheep to be compared with some lines sold last week, there were no fancy quotations for best quality. Freezers however, fetched fully 2£d, but inferior mutton did not sustain the price obtained for it then. The sale continued briskly throughout, the day, despite the large entry (uearly 8000), and prices remained firm for anything of approved quality. The highest price obtained was 20s 7d. The reopening of the Belfast works has had a good effect on this section of the market, aud as sheep-buyers from other parts of tho colony were bidding the spirited demand was accounted for. There was a very fair entry of calves, and a much better one of pigs some of which were of excellent quality. Prices however, remained much the same as last week.
