It is announced in our cables to-day that the Emperor of Germany has named the First Dragoon Guards the Victoria Guards iv honor of Queen Victoria, and has conferred the honarary colonelcy of the regiment on Her Majesty. " A deputation of officers from the regiment presented their respects and congratulations to Her Majesty — their new comrade in arms. The Duke of Cambridge has also been appointed colonel of a German Infan try regiment, Parades for the Manchester rifles in September are published to-day. According to present • arrangements Major General Edwards, R.E. OB , Commandant at Hong Kong, the officer appointed by the Imperial authorities to make a report on the colonial defences, will arrive at the Bluff from Melbourne on the 9th prox. It is his mtention to inspect as many- ..Volunteer corps as possible -during his visit, and arrangement will be made by Government by which country corps will . be enabled t-> atteud inspection paale-m the chief towns, and provided a guaranteed, number of members of county Corps, say. one-third, come in, their expenses will be paid by Government. The Wairarapa corps have received instructions to hold themselves in readiness to go to 1 * Wellington for inspection; ; -,-. ".."..... .
